Choose Ohio First Scholarship Available!

This scholarship is for Ohio State University students with disabilities majoring in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math). Scholarships can be applied to the 2012 - 13 academic year. Students are eligible for a minimum of $1500 and a maximum of $4700.  Students must participate in Ohio's STEM Ability Alliance activities such as Student Learning Communities, Mentoring, Faculty Advising and Internships to be eligible for these scholarships. The following is information concerning scholarships that are available for students with disabilities at The Ohio State University. Scholarship applications will be available at the end of Fall Semester. The scholarship winners will be notified by the beginning of April and recognized at the ODS Recognition Reception in April.

Visual Impairments

The Ohio Lions Foundation Helen Keller Scholarship

The Ohio Lion's Foundation awards four $3000 scholarships to qualified students with visual impairments who are attending OSU and are Ohio residents. To apply, complete the application form, include a copy of your college transcript, and a one to two page essay. The transcript does not need to be an official transcript. The scholarship will be presented to the winner during the ODS Recognition Reception in April.

National Federation of the Blind (NFB)

NFB has scholarships available each year for students with visual impairments. For more information, contact NFB at (641)236-6688 or download an application at www.nfb.org/services/schlprg02.htm.

The Ohio State University Charles W. Medick Scholarship

To apply for the Charles W. Medick Scholarship you must have a visual disability and complete the application form. The number of scholarships and their monetary values vary each year.  Include a copy of your college transcript, (an unofficial transcript is OK), and a one to two page essay.  The scholarship will be presented to the winner during the ODS Recognition Reception in April.

Physical Disabilities

The William and Francis Smith Junk Endowed Award

This annual award is to be given to a student with a physical disability who is enrolled at The Ohio State University and who lives in the Creative Living facility in Columbus, Ohio. Recipients will be determined by the University Committee for Student Financial Aid and ODS. Preference is given to a student demonstrating academic ability and with the greatest financial need. To be considered, a student must write a personal statement, which includes background, achievements, goals, and needs. The application and accompanying materials should be placed in the MAIL-IN box at either Creative Living complex. The number of scholarships and their monetary values vary each year. The scholarship will be presented to the winner during the ODS Recognition Reception in April.

Anna Sborowitz Scholarship

The Anna Sborowitz scholarship is awarded each academic year. It is awarded to undergraduate students with a mobility impairment and severe limitations in movement or use of one or more of their extremities. All applicants must demonstrate financial need and satisfactory progress in their academic pursuits. In addition, students must be full-time or part-time (7 or more credit hours) and showing substantial progress toward a degree at The Ohio State University. The number of scholarships and their monetary values vary each year. The scholarship will be presented to the winner during the ODS Recognition Reception in April.

Hearing Impairments

The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing College Scholarship Awards

SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED BY ORGANIZATIONS

All Disabilities

Ability Center of Toledo

$10,000 in scholarships for persons with disabilities to pursue an advanced

education will be available for the 2011-2012 academic year. The awards will be

given to students whose permanent address is in Defiance, Fulton, Henry, Lucas,

Ottawa, Williams, Wood counties in Ohio or Lenawee and Monroe counties in

Michigan. The amount of each scholarship may be up to $2,000. Additionally, The

Auxiliary to The Ability Center will be awarding additional scholarships in

conjunction with The Ability Center. Scholarships will be awarded in the amount

of $1,000 each. All applicants applying for The Ability Center Scholarship will

also be considered for the Auxiliary Scholarship."

Karla M. Lortz Scholarship  

This $1,000 scholarship will be given to a student with a disability, who will be a freshman or sophomore in college during the fall semester.

American Council of the Blind Scholarships

The completed application and supporting documents must be marked no later than March 1, 2012.  Online applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM (EST) March 1, 2012.

National Federation for the Blind Scholarships

Each year at its national convention in July, the NFB gives a broad array of thirty scholarships to recognize achievement by blind scholars.  The scholarship application deadline is March 31, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

The Mary P. Oenslager Scholastic Achievement Award (SAA) and The Marion Huber Learning Through Listening® (LTL®) Award

The Mary P. Oenslager Scholastic Achievement Awards are presented to RFB&D members who are college seniors and blind or visually impaired, in recognition of extraordinary leadership, scholarship, enterprise and service to others. Offered since 1959, the awards are given to a total of nine students who are chosen by a selection committee. RFB&D gives three top winners $6,000 each; three special honors winners $3,000 each; and three honors winners $1,000 each.

Physical Disabilities  

ELA Foundation Scholarships

We commend all applicants for their achievements to date and wish everyone the best of luck in the application process.ELA Scholarships are available only

to women graduate students with physical disabilities who are enrolled in a college or university in the United States. These scholarships are awarded

on an objective and nondiscriminatory basis. Scholarships range between $500 and $2,000.

SpinLife Innovation in Motion Scholarship Program

As the country's largest internet retailer of mobility equipment, we are excited about the development of the SpinLife Innovation in Motion Scholarship program designed to aid college students in their academic endeavors. The annual program will provide up to two $500 scholarships and is open to students who are manual or power wheelchair users enrolled at an accredited 4-year institution.
